MAGIC continues to urge DNR to halt commercial logging in Green Ridge State Forest

Green Ridge State Forest is located in eastern Allegany County, largely south of Interstate 68. Comprising 44,000 acres, Green Ridge is Maryland's second largest publicly owned forest. The MAGIC Alliance, in a public comment dated May 25, 2009, urged DNR to stop commercial logging in Green Ridge. We made three points:

(1) The State loses money logging Green Ridge State Forest.

(2) Logging is environmentally unfriendly-- it fragments the forest, causes soil erosion, and opens the canopy to invasive species.

(3) Logging releases sequestered greenhouse gases.

On July 19th, MAGIC wrote the Maryland DNR (Department of Natural Resources), requesting a stop to the logging in Green Ridge Forest. Steve Koehn, director the Maryland Forest Service and State Forester, in a letter dated July 30, 2009 responded to our request and refused to discontinue logging. On August 15, 2009, the MAGIC Alliance replied to Mr. Koehn and the DNR, urging reconsideration of his position. Click below to review MAGIC's position and the correspondence.
