MAGIC recently urged DNR to halt commercial logging in Green Ridge State Forest
Green Ridge, Maryland’s second largest publicly owned forest, is located in eastern Allegany County.
DNR proposed cutting down 200 acres of trees during FY 2010.
In its opposition to continued logging, MAGIC observed that:
DNR most likely loses money on logging;
Logging is environmentally problematic: it causes erosion; prevents the development of snags (dead trees) and understory required for certain plants and smaller animals to thrive; and opens the forest canopy, permitting invasive species to become established;
Logging releases CO2 into the atmosphere, adding to global warming.
